On the 4 hour trip through the desert in a 6 passenger van with German and Russian tourists and me, we listened to the local Afrikaans speaking radio DJ play American Country songs with heavy emphasis on Kenny Chesney and Taylor Swift. Then he played an hour of classic American rock and most of us were seat dancing to John Mellencamp singing “I Was Born in a Small Town.” All the Internet cafes here in Swakop play American C and W, too. And everyone speaks English, German and Afrikaans. Love the accent of the Swakopmunders saying , “yes” which they pronounce “yee es” and cafe is pronounced: “caff.”
Name of the van is after the nasty beetle shown here. Desert survivor!
