Stumbling Upon Inexpensive International Travel

The idea of a trip around the world seemed unimaginable a year ago.  I thought I could never afford it, especially if I was going to retire. But just for fun, I typed “around the world airline tickets” into my search engine. The first site that popped up was Airtreks.com.  The site asked you to type in the places you wanted to go and then gave an estimated cost of the trip, in my case $5,000-$7,000.  A toll free number was offered if I wanted to discuss this option further.  I did.  So, I ended up speaking with travel consultant, Chris, who lives in Australia.  We spoke daily for a week and planned my trip to Namibia, South Africa, Oman, Australia and New Zealand.  Total cost?  $4700.  I did spring for the “cancel-for-any-reason” insurance option which added another $400 to the ticket cost.

As for lodging, it will be AirB&B all the way, with an average cost per night of $60. Most of my accommodations are in independent condos or apartments that include washer/dryer and kitchen.  When I am staying in someone’s actual home, I will have my own en suite bathroom with private entrance. From what I see online, if you are an AirB&B host you better get a five star rating or you will not be around long. My experience with AirB&B so far has exceeded expectation.  Shortly after making a reservation on the site, the host texts a welcome note. I have been in email contact with several hosts who are delighted to provide concierge service.
